Clean Caring Responsive

Ophthalmology

The Ophthalmology team is a small but very busy department of experienced staff who work together to ensure a high standard of patient care.

Visiting consultants run outpatient clinics and operating sessions as well as laser treatments. They have specialist interests in cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

On average they see between 75 and 80 patients per day in the eye clinics which run all day every weekday - patients age from premature babies to 90+. As well as planned appointments they see urgent referrals from GPs and opticians as well as taking referrals from the Accident and Emergency Department.

The hospital also has casualty clinics mrun by the ophthalmic nurses and nurse-led pre-assessment clinics where the patients are assessed and eye measurements are taken prior to ophthalmic surgery.  An optician visits each week to run a glaucoma clinic.

Laser clinics are held weekly for the treatment of ophthalmic conditions and not for laser corrective surgery.

Eye clinic hospital information point

Somerset Association for the Blind (SAB), supported by Yeovil District Hospital, and Somerset Social Services, provides a service offering advice on where to get help and support for patients with sight problems.

In order to support patients attending the eye clinics at the hospital, SAB has established the service in the Eye Department which gives information, guidance and advice to patients after appointments with a consultant.

This information includes the full range of resources and services offered by SAB and Social Services to help the visually impaired whether that be just friendly support and a listening ear whilst attending the eye clinic or more complex support and information.

Volunteers give their services at the information point and full training and support is provided. They possess good communication skills and are aware of the need to be helpful and supportive for patients who may be experiencing physical and emotional difficulties.

They can offer assistance or advice for support that may sometimes need to be ongoing such as home visits, resource equipment or social group information.

Feel free to approach and introduce yourself to them. For more information contact Tom, SAB Volunteers Manager, Tel: 01823 366150. Please also visit their website from the link on the right.
